·
Implement the California Department of Fish and
Wildlife’s Heritage and Wild Trout Program in various watersheds across the
state
·
Monitor population trends of native salmonid species,
including rare, threatened, and federally endangered trout, to determine
necessary management actions and potential fishing regulations
·
Utilize standard fish sampling techniques such as
snorkeling, electrofishing, and seining to explore wild trout population
characteristics
·
Ensure the scientific integrity of all data collected by
following standardized sampling protocol and implementing QA/QC measures.
·
Determine stream health by assessing habitat and water
quality variables such as water velocity, temperature, pH, conductivity,
canopy cover, substrate composition, % large woody debris, meso-habitat
type, wetted width, erosion, cover, and other indicators of stream health
·
Collect genetic, gonad, and scale samples from isolated
trout populations to determine genetic heterogeneity and inbreeding
intensity, identify potential founder populations, and establish age at
maturity.
·
Assist in the recovery and reestablishment of federally
endangered Paiute Cutthroat trout in Silver King Creek, CA
·
Engage in strenuous activity (hiking, wading, swimming,
carrying heavy packs up to 50 pounds) for long distances (up to 10 miles)
over an extended period of time (multiple weeks) in remote areas without
days off.

Acquired basic stream health assessment and water
quality monitoring skills for measuring abiotic characteristics: water
velocity (flow meter), temperature (thermometer), turbidity (turbidimeter),
pH (pH probe), conductivity (conductivity meter), dissolved oxygen (DO
probe); as well as biotic characteristics: macroinvertebrate abundance and
diversity, bacterial and algal densities, macrophyte diversity, invasive
species identification, and other indicators of lotic and lentic system
health
